How often should pool screens be replaced?

By condition, not by a fixed number of years — no screen mesh manufacturer researched for this site publishes a service-life figure in years for any product. The tells are chalky, brittle mesh that tears when pushed, spline that has hardened and sits proud of the channel, and panels that have gone slack and drum in wind.

What is actually published, and what is not

This is a genuine gap in the manufacturer literature, not a research miss: Phifer, Saint-Gobain ADFORS and Super Screen — the three manufacturers whose pool-cage mesh specs were checked for this site — publish mesh counts, materials and (for two vinyl-coated products) warranty terms, but none publishes a years-of-service figure for any pool-cage mesh. The only durability numbers that exist anywhere in their literature are 1,200-hour accelerated colorfastness ratings, which measure fading resistance under lab conditions, not how long the mesh lasts installed on a Florida roof.

Some installer and retailer sites claim figures like “20–50 years” for premium mesh or that standard fiberglass “becomes brittle after 2–3 years” — both are marketing claims from interested parties with no manufacturer citation behind them, and this site will not repeat either one as fact.

What actually shortens the clock in Lake Mary

Two things, specifically: oak canopy along Country Club Road and the Markham Woods corridor, where falling limbs and leaf litter abrade roof panels and hold moisture against the mesh; and unshaded west-facing walls that take full Central Florida afternoon sun. Both are covered in more detail on the mesh guide.

Questions

Questions people actually ask

Does mesh have a warranty that tells you when to replace it?

Only two warranty documents for this category could be verified at all: a 10-year limited warranty from Super Screen on its vinyl-coated polyester mesh, and Phifer’s 10-year Extended Limited Warranty — which covers only its sun-control fabrics (SunTex and similar), explicitly not insect screen. Phifer publishes no warranty length at all for its 18x14 fiberglass, 20x20 no-see-um, PetScreen or TuffScreen products. A warranty length is not a service-life figure either way — it is what the manufacturer will replace if it fails within the term.
